This piece was commissioned for the January 6, 1940, issue of The Saturday Evening Post. The story it accompanies was serialized across eight issues from late 1939 to early 1940. Several of the original issues, including the issue with this image, are included with this sale. Literature: Saturday Evening Post, cover, January 6, 1940 Benton Henderson Clark’s Saloon Gang originally appeared in an edition of the Saturday Evening Post on January 6, 1940. The work, reproduced on nearly a full page in the magazine, accompanied Clarence Budington Kelland’s serialized story Valley of the Sun, which ran across eight consecutive issues in late 1939 and early 1940. The work was captioned in the magazine with a short description: “As he entered the town, herding the two men ahead of him, loungers gathered on the side of the road to stare. Word ran ahead.” Clark, an Ohio-based painter who was living in New York City at the time of this commission, contributed to all eight parts of the Kelland story.
