Provenance: Private collection, UK, Scotland

Few contemporary artists have reimagined the mythology of the American West as boldly as Billy Schenck. Drawing inspiration from Pop Art, Hollywood Westerns, comic books, and classic advertising imagery, Schenck has developed a visual language that is unmistakably his own. His paintings distill familiar Western icons into crisp, graphic compositions defined by saturated color, dramatic cropping, and cinematic energy, offering a fresh perspective on the enduring legends of the frontier.

In Chaos in Calgary, Schenck transforms the excitement of the rodeo into a striking modern image. The tightly cropped cowboy and horse dominate the composition, silhouetted against a brilliant circular backdrop that heightens both the drama and graphic impact of the scene. Strong outlines, flattened planes of color, and a carefully controlled palette replace traditional realism with a bold contemporary aesthetic, reflecting the artist's fascination with both popular culture and Western history. Painted in 2017 and coming from a private collection in Scotland, Chaos in Calgary is a dynamic example of Schenck's celebrated ability to bridge the worlds of fine art and American iconography.
