E. Martin Hennings completed at least four paintings with the word “homeward” in the title, including this 1929 painting, Homeward Through the Sage. Each is uniquely composed and painted, although each bears a similar theme of Native American men on horseback traversing through the land to an unseen destination. Hennings, who was raised in Chicago, first came to Taos, New Mexico, in 1917 and moved there permanently in 1921. While other artists came and went from that magical place, Hennings stayed in Northern New Mexico for the rest of his life. For Hennings, “homeward” was always Taos.
