Montana artist Earle Heikka is one of the great “what if” Western artists of the 20th century. The sculptor lived only 31 years, and yet the work he left is remarkable. Heikka lived in Great Falls, Montana, and even shared the city for 14 years with Charlie Russell, though they likely never crossed paths. He struggled for sales for much of his career. In 1941, Heikka died by suicide. His work was rediscovered years after his death, which resulted in posthumous casts. In 1963, artist Joe De Yong offered a tribute: “What has received far less attention than deserved is the wholly untrained, yet artistically admirable quality of modeling that was produced in the all-too-short-lifetime of Earl Heikka of Great Falls.”
