One of the most popular and recognizable painters of city scenes, Edouard Cortès is known for his paintings of Paris streets. The artist was born in 1882 and died in 1969, which allowed his life and career to intersect with many magical periods in Paris’ history, from horse-drawn carriages and oil lanterns, to streetcars and gas lamps, to automobiles and the electric lightbulb. His work would frequently bounce back and forth through time as he captured the life and light of Paris. This painting shows the Café de la Paix, which is still in operation across from the Opéra Garnier in Paris.
