Provenance: Scottsdale Art Auction, Scottsdale, AZ, 2008 Although undated, Indian with Peace Pipe was likely made around 1900 or 1901, either not long after Edward Hopper graduated from high school in New York or after he started studying at the New York School of Art. Several rare sketches on paper exist from this period showing Native American figures standing in various positions. Hopper experienced a long stagnant period in the early 20th century as he was unsure of where he wanted to go and what he wanted to do, but by the 1920s and 1930s he was creating American masterpieces left and right.
