Fremont Ellis was an American painter (1897-1985) primarily known for his landscapes, especially those depicting the Southwestern United States. His art is characterized by an impressionistic style, capturing the beauty and light of the New Mexico landscape. Ellis developed a strong connection to New Mexico, where he lived and worked for much of his life. He was one of the founding members of Los Cinco Pintores (The Five Painters), a modernist art society in Santa Fe that played a crucial role in establishing the city as a center for avant-garde art in the early 20th century, though Ellis's style leaned more towards realism than the group's declared modernist orientation Ellis's painting "Repose" is one of his many landscape paintings of his beloved New Mexico.
