After transitioning out of successful career in illustration, James Bama turned his attention to people in the West. As his reputation grew, so did demand in his work, including from celebrities. It created a unique dilemma, one that Bama set straight in typical Bama fashion: “Famous people think they can buy you. And they don’t want wrinkles. I’ve said no to George Lucas, Malcolm Forbes and Clint Eastwood. I can make as much money painting someone that I want to paint. I don’t do portraits of people—I paint people. They don’t pay me—I pay them to pose for me.”
