Pennsylvania-born artist James N. Hess studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he later exhibited his work in 1878, one year before painting Wrangling a Longhorn Cattle. He also worked as an illustrator and influenced Henry Ossawa Tanner, one of the earlier and most prominent Black painters in American art. He is sometimes attributed incorrectly as John N. Hess.
