The Rainmaker by John Coleman was also inspired by the journals and diaries of the noted American painter George Catlin (1796 1872). During his travels Catlin observed a number of sacred Indian ceremonies that involved an appeal to the Great Spirit for the life giving source of water–rain. This ceremony was virtually the same among pre-historic tribes of native Americans from coast to coast.
Coleman in interviews states that The Rainmaker is one of his favorite works of art. “The Rainmaker was one of those — my style became more painterly. My growth points were the ones that were most important to me.”
