Born in New Jersey, the son of draftsman and a tapestry mill worker, John Walter Scott was destined to become another lifelong mill worker until the factory began offering free night school. It was this nudge toward design that eventually led him into a successful career in illustration at many of the top pulp magazines: Wild West Weekly, Mystery Tales, Star Detective, Two-Gun Western, Uncanny Tales and many others. Scott later served in World War II, became friends with R.G. Harris and took large corporate and religious commissions. Toward the end of his life, after leaving illustration, he turned his attention to the Old West. Although his Western work represents a small fraction of his career, it speaks to Scott’s strength as a skilled artist and storyteller.
