A man of many artistic talents—lithography, etching, engraving, stained-glass and design—Joseph Fleck was one of the many European artists who immigrated to the United States from Europe to then discover the beauty of Taos, New Mexico. Born in Austria-Hungary, Fleck only barely made it to America after surviving on the Italian front in World War I. His work in New Mexico was mostly representational, although he did make frequent swings into more modern and abstract art, notes of which can be seen in Taos Cowpuncher.
