A rejection could have dissuaded Julius Rolshoven from pursuing art, but it only increased his resolve. After the National Academy of Design rejected his admission in 1876, the artist crossed the Atlantic Ocean to study in Germany. He met Frank Duveneck, spent time in Italy and France, and honed his skill as a painter. By 1885, the National Academy was showing his work in exhibitions. His career shifted greatly in 1916 when he moved to Taos, New Mexico, where he began painting the pueblo people and the landscape.
