Dixon was one of the first major painters to paint the state. During a 1927 trip that was supposed to last two weeks—it lasted four months—Dixon and friend Francis Tobin explored Nevada’s arid sagebrush valleys. They stayed at Alder Creek Ranch for nearly a week and used it as a base of operations before heading out to the Black Rock Desert and Winnemucca.
