It’s possible no other artist was influenced more by Charles M. Russell than Olaf C. Seltzer. This might seem like a backhanded compliment, but to Seltzer, who was enamored with Russell and his work, it is high praise. Seltzer arrived in Great Falls, Montana, in 1897 at 19 years old. He met Russell the same year and later became a pupil of the famous cowboy artist. Although their works have similarities, Seltzer’s paintings have their own unique voice and cadence that allows them to stand out, even next to the work of Russell. This mixed-media portrait was painted in 1913.
