Berninghaus’ gouache painting Apache Indians at Boulder could be a companion piece to the marvelous Apache Encampment at Boulder Lake (Jicarilla Apaches). Both works show the same large grouping of Apache families amid horses and teepees. Several figures appear in both paintings. Boulder Lake refers to what is more commonly known today as Stone Lake, located on the Jicarilla Apache Nation Reservation in Northern New Mexico.
