The West that Karl Bodmer saw and drew and painted on as the official artist in Prince Maximilian’s five thousand mile expedition up the Missouri in 1833-34 was rolling up like a carpet behind him. Back in his native Europe, Bodmer published engravings and aquatints of the prairie he depicted, vast with buffalo, and the many Native Americans he painted, in an incomparable folio, Travels in the Interior of North America. His exquisite, sensitive portraits are often the only records we have of the many individual Native Americans he painted.
