In Branding Cattle—Vaqueros Heading and Heeling, two cowboys of Old California—vaqueros (say the v as a b and you quickly arrive at buckaroos) of Spanish heritage—rope a Correinte cow at the head and heels (hence the term “heading and heeling”) while a third vaquero applies a brand. By 1888, Remington had traveled throughout the West and Mexico and his talents were highly sought after. Muir’s Picturesque California was a major undertaking, featuring images after works by Thomas Moran, William Keith, and a host of big name painters. Branding Cattle is a fully finished painting, with an entire herd of cattle and landscape from edge to edge. Remington contributed four paintings, including Branding Cattle; they were reproduced as a suite of four photogravures, the first of the artist’s works to be sold as prints.
