Colorado native Ken Bunn is one of America’s preeminent sculptors of animals, known equally for his magnificent birds and superb mammals. Because of Bunn’s interest in animal locomotion, he will often exaggerate—deliberately—some aspect of the animal in order to draw the viewer’s attention to movement. It’s an effective strategy, whether the animal is a whitetail doe looking over her shoulder or a mountain lion on the prowl stepping silently from ledge to ledge.
This life size mountain lion, Intruder, is Bunn’s entry in a long line of large American cats that have been cast in bronze. Think of animalier Edward Kemeys (1843-1907), whose trips to the West in the 1870’s inspired a love for the “panther.” Still Hunt still sits, and has since 1883, on an enormous rock overlooking a path in New York’s Central Park—and still scares the unwary jogger. Or Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), whose Jaguar and Reaching Jaguar loom over the Bronx Zoo in the Sculpture Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bunn’s Intruder is a worthy addition to the list of great bronzes of great cats.
