Cheyenne Brave
Artist: Paxson, E.S.Date of Birth: 1852-1919
Medium: Watercolor
Dimensions: 20 x 15 inches
Signed: Signed lower right
Verso:

Self-taught, though his work was known from coast to coast and beyond, E. S. Paxson thought nothing of painting saloon signs in Montana if he had to. The envy of his good friend, Charles M. Russell, E. S. Paxson was one of the last—if not the absolute last—Western artists who lived in what we call the Old West. Paxson was a scout in the Nez Perce´ Indian war, rode guard on the Overland Stage and took part in the American war in the Philippines. He was also a staunch friend to many Native American leaders. In the delicate watercolor Cheyenne Brave, the Peace Medal dangling from the bone choker, coupled with the warrior’s serene expression, exudes strength and commands respect.
