Pariskaroopa—Two Crows, is part of John Coleman’s Explorer Artists Series, an exploration in three dimensions of the unparalleled portraits of Native American chiefs, braves and medicine men painted by George Catlin and Karl Bodmer in the 1830’s. Faithful to the two-dimensional originals, Coleman fleshes these individuals out in all their splendor, inviting us to look at the portraits anew. An Honored Life depicts a Plains Indian chief, looking inward and back over his life and deeds with a mixture of sadness and satisfaction, a sense of having done his best.
