Eustace Ziegler was born in Detroit. He followed in his father’s footsteps and was ordained as an Episcopal Minister, but art was his calling. After periods of study at the Detroit Institute of Arts and at the Detroit Museum of Art, Ziegler traveled to Alaska in 1909 to run an Episcopal mission but found himself fascinated by the people he served, and he began to sketch and paint them in his spare time. Like Sydney Laurence, Ziegler painted landscapes, but he is best known for his portraits of First Nations people. Ziegler returned to the East Coast to further his studies, and then moved back to Alaska for a time. But, ultimately, he made Seattle his home base and enjoyed a forty-year career as one of the finest painters of Alaska and its people.
