Like Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell before him, John Hampton was interested in “types” of Western characters. In these eight portraits, Hampton captures the diversity of men in old Arizona: Apache and Navajo, Cowboy and Vaquero, Mountain Man and Prospector, Sheepherder and Lumber Jack. What Hampton seems to be interested in here are the particulars of each costume and, as well, hints at attitude and the inner life of each man. The cowboy and vaquero, for example, are bold and assured, but where the cowboy is brash, the vaquero is cool. Where the mountain man is steady and square in his stance, the prospector leans on his shovel with a bit of lean uncertainty under his rakish hat. Where the sheepherder is contemplative, the lumber jack seems to be focused on the next tree that needs felling. Where the Apache has an air of mastery in and over his world, the Navajo seems to be wondering what lies at the heart of the Earth, and the universe. These portraits tell us a great deal about how Hampton saw the characters who would people his paintings and sculptures.
