Perhaps the most important Taos-based illustrator, Frank HoffmanÕs love of the race horses his father bred and the job he himself did as art director for the Chicago AmericanÑwhere he illustrated a wide variety of sporting and arts eventsÑprepared him for the life he began in 1916, when he first went West. After meeting one of his heroes, Leon Gaspard, in Taos, Hoffman stayed on and bought a small ranch two miles from town, raising animals he would use as subjects for his paintings. His work was featured in The Saturday Evening Post and other notable periodicals and companies like the Great Northern Railway and Brown & Bigelow hired him to produce calendar art and advertising.
