Don Crowley enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist in the East before settling in Arizona to capture that state’s indigenous peoples. In The Transformation, Crowley catches a San Carlos Apache girl contemplating The Sunrise ceremony that will initiate her into womanhood. Crowley says, “Legend has it that a young woman molded of white clay once mated with the sun. The result of that union was the original Apache tribe. Therefore, one phase of the ceremony includes the girl being splattered with white clay as she kneels in prayer to the sun to symbolize that union.”
