Since her first trip to Europe in 1956, Glenna has been influenced by classical art and Nineteenth century artists. Her first life-size bronze in 1981 was a painstakingly modeled nude Girl With Ribbons, followed closely by another life-size piece Summer, first realized in a small terracotta preliminary study. She courageously continued to sculpt nude figures, reliefs, and torsos, of various scales, with amazing success. This was highly unusual for a Southwestern artist, but Glenna considered herself in the stream of American art, in the company of sculptors like Harriet Frishmuth, Augustus Saint Gaudens, and Donald Delue. The Naiads are obviously influenced by Greek, Roman, and Neoclassical art. The skateboarder Ollie is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Myron’s Discus Thrower she saw in Rome. A Roman sculpture of three figures back-to-back was the inspiration for Ancestors and Spirit Of The Southwest that was in turn reinterpreted in the Mayo Ancestors for Mayo Hospital, Phoenix. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial, sometimes called the Vietnam Pieta’, is a nod to Michelangelo. — Dan Anthony
