One of G. Harvey’s recurrent pictorial motifs concerns the theme of refuge. The world might be one giant storm—or, often, one imminent storm—that we traverse out of necessity, at our peril, but there are moments of refuge, places of community and communion, comradely gatherings in warm dwellings out of the cold, the blow, the night. The Layover depicts just such a refuge, a rest stop that is all the more welcome for being temporary. The solitary rider in Hunting by Moonlight (lot 429)—what, precisely, is he hunting?—comes out of another one of Harvey’s themes: solitude that ticks over into loneliness.
