Born and raised in Great Falls, Earle Heikka was directly influenced by the work of Charles Russell. Largely self-taught, the Depression found Heikka in desperate financial straits, though his realistic and dramatic clay models had attracted the attention of important collectors like Gary Cooper. Tragically, Heikka took his own life before most of his highly detailed, pack trains, stagecoaches, and cowboys ever saw the light of day in bronze.
