Inspired by his friends Maynard Dixon and Nicolai Fechin, John Hilton abandoned brush painting for the palette knife and embarked on a lifelong project to illuminate the many moods of the Sonoran Desert. The son of missionaries, Hilton traveled the world, receiving some of his early formal art training in China and had what can only be described as an incredible life: he was—among other things—an accomplished musician, gemologist to the stars, naturalist, desert training scout for General Patton, miner, and author.
This lot is illustrated in The Story of Leanin' Tree on page 216.
