Allan Houser was the first child born in Oklahoma to Geronimo’s Chiricahua Apache after their release in 1914 from decades of detention in Florida, so it isn’t surprising that the strength and dignity of his ancestry and the triumphs and travails flow through and from his sculptures. Combining Modernist approaches and abstractions with traditional Native American elements, Houser’s simplified figures straddle the plane of the world we all live on and a higher, spiritual plane. In Houser’s sculptures, life, work and worship are made of the whole cloth of purpose; they are aspects of divinity that cannot truly be separated.
