Wilson Hurley was a West Point graduate, Vietnam vet, engineer and lawyer. But he left these lives behind to paint the American West. Hurley studied under Josef Bakos, Theodore Van Soelen and John Young-Hunter, three important second generation Santa Fe and Taos painters. Hurley’s many murals demonstrate a deep understanding of the American landscape tradition as practiced by Bierstadt, Moran and Leigh. Wilson described A Full Moon at Sunrise on Mt. Taylor to Ed Trumble with the following words: “At dawn on the 25th of March, I watched as the full moon set behind Mt. Taylor, eighty miles to the west. As the morning sun crept over the hills behind me, the snowy ridges of the mountain emerged, and the desert floor was suddenly washed with oranges, pinks, and blues, just as you see them in the painting.”
