Having made its kill, the sleek leopard emerges from the shadows. Framed in those shallow shadows, Painter David Shepherd outlines the muscular power of this big cat that stalks the yellow thorns and brush. The leopard’s kill, nearly invisible and neatly tucked into shade, will keep. For the moment, the leopard has no need of camouflage, but you can see that the colors of the animal dovetail neatly with the colors of the terrain. The yellow spikes of grass and thorn that crackle across the canvas, abstractions of a sort, give the “after the hunt” moment of quiet a kind of electric energy.
