Ross Stefan’s father worked in advertising in Milwaukee and was very supportive of his son’s artistic ambitions. At 13, young Ross had his first art exhibition, which, as it happened, was a smash. Six years later, perhaps because of Ross’s health, the family moved to Arizona. In Arizona, Stefan took classes for two years, then struck out on his own, opening a studio in Tubac and venturing into Navajo territory to interpret the land and people. Listening is about as silent a painting as you will ever see. Yet, despite the stillness, the creamy light dances through the leaves. Stefan, against intuition, stipples the yellow light on top of the green leaves. The optical illusion is what makes the light dance. Against this, the shadow on the rocks has a foreboding shape, and this shadow seems to be the occasion for the pause to listen.
