George Browne was the son of Belmore Browne, a very fine painter of the Canadian and Alaskan wilderness. George, who had no love for school, would receive his training in woodcraft and painting at his father’s side and would became a master at rendering big game animals as well as game birds. Though Mallards Drifting In is a field study, it is also very much a fully realized composition, with splashes of autumnal color enfolding a gray, “birdy” day.
