Grace Ravlin was born in Kaneville, Illinois. A high school elective class in art set her ambition in motion and she headed out into the world on her own, studying and painting in France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia—and New Mexico. Letters that survive indicate that she visited New Mexico as early as 1916 and appears to have returned there at other times. In this painting, Ravlin captures the dusty sinuous grace of the corn dance and the “Delight Maker” jesters in black and white, poking fun at the women in the line.
