James Boren, the first art director of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame at its inception in 1965, leveraged his position and the opportunities it afforded him very wisely. Meeting and talking with artists he admired helped him not only to advance the aims of the Cowboy Hall of Fame but also allowed him to absorb the lessons of his peers and use them to enhance his own work. Boren favored masters like Russell and Fechin, and, in his own fine watercolors, combined the former’s “easy realism” with the latter’s “great luminosity and vitality of color.” (Krakel, James Boren, p. 42). In Morning Shadows, Boren—as he so often does—makes watercolor composition look easy. But the balance he achieves between light and shadow, horizontals and verticals, regular and irregular shapes is no mean feat. Even the few bluebells scattered in the foreground have a hidden rhythm as they increase from left to right.
