Rushing Lightning is the hero in a story entitled “Little Moccasin’s Ride on the Thunder Horse,” by Colonel Guido Ilges, a Civil War hero and veteran of the Indian Wars. In the tale, fourteen-year old Rushing Lightning is an indolent adolescent who decides to investigate the Thunder Horse (train) up close and thus earn the respect of his people. After a terrifying ride atop the train, he is captured by his tribe’s enemies, the Crow, and given to a kindly couple who eventually help him escape, mounted on a swift, magical horse. On his return to his people, Rushing Lightning is hailed as a hero who has earned his manhood.
