Our Land

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 24 x 36 inches

In Our Land, Olaf Wieghorst sets a momentous occasionÑthe meeting of two Native Americans with the scouts the ride ahead of a wagon trainÑinside a vast, brooding landscape. By keeping the figures relatively small, Wieghorst seems to indicate that this isnÕt a moment of violent confrontation. Not yet, anyway. The gentle gesture of the Native AmericanÑpalm up, signaling halt, go no furtherÑis balanced by the scoutÕs rifleÑout, held easily, not, for the moment, threatening. Negotiation might work here. And it might not. The sky is heavy with a storm, but the storm hasnÕt broken yet. Narratively, Our Land is a nice piece of naturalism, in which the environment neatly mirrors the simmering emotions of the encounter.
