The Papago people, now called by their own name, Tohono O’odham, resides in southern Arizona, south of Phoenix and west of Tucson, and in and northern Sonora, Mexico. Traditional Tohono O’odham pottery was utilitarian, but as tourism came to the Southwest in the 19th century, pottery makers began to embellish their wares for trade. Minerals in the clay create distinctive colors, and the application of various tree pitches and paints form the designs. Mending pottery is as important as making pottery, and Leigh captures the old Tohono woman plying her trade.
