Like so many very fine artists from the golden age of illustration, there is little documentation about George Giguere’s career. He is listed as having flourished in New York from 1917 to 1953, and as having worked for, among others, The Saturday Evening Post, Boy’s Life, McClure’s, and The American Magazine. In Protecting the Derricks, Giguere’s artistry injects high drama into the work, placing the man—hand on gun, bracing himself with his left hand—between the violence of the gusher and the shadow that creeps up his bright white shirt. He is ready for action. He’d better be.
