Lon Megargee has the classic turn of the twentieth century western artist pedigree. Born into a wealthy Philadelphia family, he ran away from home to become a cowboy, and did, roping and riding in Arizona. At some point, the art bug bit him and he went back East to study, only to head back West to paint. In 1909 he found work as an art director at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and did that for a number of years before settling in Arizona to pursue his art. Megargee worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, did illustrations for books and periodicals, and painted murals. He seemed to be able to adapt his style to his subject, but his portraits of Native Americans all share a similar boldness of line and color while finding poignancy and introspection in his subjects.
