Harry Jackson and his works were close to President Ronald Reagan’s Western heart. In 1982, the President gave a cast of Safe and Sound as an official gift of state to the President of Italy. In Safe and Sound, Jackson casts a cowboy and calf in the Christian allegory of the shepherd and the lost lamb. Bundled against the winter blast, the cowboy rests the calf across the pommel of his saddle while the calf, for its part, rests wide- eyed, almost as if contemplating its good fortune.
