Fritz Scholder was one of the most important artists of Native American ancestry who worked in the twentieth century. Born in Minnesota, Scholder’s studies culminated in a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts and numerous awards and grants from important foundations. The distortions in his portraits, the flat affect, the dark imagery of skulls and skins has its origins in modernist practice as seen in Francis Bacon and others, but it is also rooted in the difficulties of contemporary Native American life and in the struggle to reconcile modernity with traditional culture.
