The realism in Grant Speed’s bronzes stems from his years of experience as a bronc buster and cowboy in West Texas. And yet, as you can see in works like Stampedin’ Over a Cutbank, his realism isn’t at all slavish. If anything, Speed, who was one of the first members of the Cowboy Artists of America, makes realism serve his art in a very sophisticated way. Details convey information about the who, what, where, and when, of his subjects, but he blurs them, withholds them, or ignores them altogether when he wants to suggest movement or draw your eye in a particular direction.
