A key scene in Conrad Richter’s beloved novel The Light in the Forest is brought to life in this painting by one of the masters of American History painting, John Clymer. In the story, John Butler, a white boy captured by the Lenni Lenape Indians when he was small, is caught between two warring cultures when he is returned by treaty to his white family. Finding flaws in the extreme violence on both sides, John feels that he doesn’t truly belong anywhere, though his actions to prevent a retaliatory massacre of whites by the Lenape make him a pariah among the Indians he has known all his life.
