Gerald McCann was born in New York City and studied art there at the Pratt Institute and at the Art Students League. In 1939, McCann began drawing pen and ink illustrations for the pulp magazines. After a stint in the army during World War II, McCann made his home and raised his family in Long Island and continued to enjoy success as an illustrator of Western pulps and Classics Illustrated comics. Aligning himself with Harold Von SchmidtÕs Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut, McCann ultimately moved to the area and began to teach courses there.
