Descending in a direct aesthetic line from masters like Winslow Homer, A. B. Frost, and Frank Benson, Ogden Pleissner is arguably the most important 20th century interpreter of the American sporting scene, especially in the medium of watercolor. Because Pleissner considered himself first and foremost a painter of landscapes, his sportsmen are always in and of the scene and season, and his paintings are undiminished with time. Ross Lake, in the Wind River Range in Wyoming, now part of the Gros Ventre Wilderness was one of Pleissner’s favorite western subjects, and places to fish. The Outlet depicted in the painting, which I believe connects Ross Lake to Upper Ross Lake, would be a natural spot for a trout fisherman: flowing water creating pools and eddies and plenty of jammed logs for trout to hide under. You could make a day of it there, and then some.
