An important Cincinnati artist, John Hauser studied in Munich, Dusseldorf and Paris, where he developed a deliberate yet lush realistic style. Though he is often overshadowed by fellow Cincinnati native Henry Farny, Hauser at his best more than holds his own. Hauser is the genuine article: he made yearly trips West and in 1901 he was adopted into the Sioux nation and given the name “Straight White Shield.” The Scouts combines his interests in Indian portraiture and in scenes of Native American life. While the other scouts peer into the distance, the eye goes to the impossibly long headdress on the warrior chief at right. The sheer number of eagle feathers boggles the mind and dazzles the eye. To reinforce his stature, he alone looks in another direction, as if awaiting a report from his subordinates.
