In the small yard in his boyhood home in Brooklyn, John Wade Hampton roped cows in his mind with his mother’s clothesline. With earnings from the “Red Ryder” comic strip which he helped draw, Hampton moved West—to Scottsdale for a time, in fact—where he raised and punched a few head (mostly as models for his art) and helped found the Cowboy Artists of America. The Visitor is one of those neat paintings that leaves a great deal to the imagination. Who is visiting as that gorgeous dusk lights up the sky? Who? And why? And what are they talking about? Only the glow of the fire through the teepee flap gives any hint at all, and what it hints at is some sort of intensity—old friends meeting by chance; news of family and friends; rumors of war, of love? All of the above? The horse hears all of the whispers, laughter, songs, but he isn’t telling.
