In clouds of dust and dust charged light, David Shepherd’s African animals retain their unique individuality. Personality and history are written in their eyes and ears and noses, their manes and tails and scars. Though he was born in Britain, David Shepherd has spent a lifetime painting and advocating for the great game animals of Africa. He founded what has become a vital African wildlife foundation and was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his efforts. The portraiture in Three Lions directly expresses Shepherd’s fascination with individual animals. Beyond the soft haze that characterizes his style and gives his works a dreamlike quality, each lion, captured in a quiet moment, seems introspective, contemplative. But the lion in the center, coming out of his reverie, stares at the viewer, reminding us that we should be wary of anthropomorphizing wild animals.
